Sleep Apnea Home Remedies Part One

As many as approximately one in five adults may suffer from sleep apnea, resulting in lethargy, tiredness, stress, confusion and headaches. Furthermore, left untreated the condition can lead to more serious complications such as heart problems. However not all cases are severe enough to require expensive or potentially invasive procedures and so many individuals may prefer to treat themselves using a variety of home remedies to lessen the problem.
The first and most well known way to help prevent sleep apnea is to lose weight. Obesity (with a body mass index of 30 or larger), coupled with a large neck circumference potentially a result of that obesity (anything larger that 16″ in women or 17″ in men) is correlated with high incidence of sleep apnea. This is because low muscle tone and lots of soft tissue around the airway – often caused by being overweight – create structural problems in the neck and throat which can obstruct breathing. This occurs as the neck muscles relax during sleep which causes the soft tissue around the airways to collapse. Where muscle is weak and this flesh is in abundance that can then shut off the airways and make breathing highly difficult. One of the best home remedies then is to get lots of cardiovascular exercise and restrict your diet in order to lose weight around the neck.
