An additional way to keep the windpipes open is to try clearing your sinuses; not all cases of obstructive sleep apnea are caused by the neck itself and in many acute cases it can be caused by colds while in some instances problems with the nasal passage can cause a build up of phlegm.
In order to clear the sinuses, try using a cream such as Vic on your chest which contains fumes that will help clear sinuses. Alternatively you can try inhaling steam before bed – cover a towel over your head over a bowl of boiling water and stay there for five minutes until you feel your passageways clear. If breathing through your nose remains difficult then certain dental products designed to keep your mouth open during the night may also prove effective.
A third cause for blockages can be a large tongue which can block the back of throat or enlarged tonsils. In the latter case you may want to look into getting your tonsils removed, while a large tongue can also be helped by some dental products.
Finally making other lifestyle changes to your general health can also help reduce symptoms. This includes lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol, controlling your blood sugar levels, keeping a healthy diet, quitting smoking and drinking fewer alcoholic beverages.
