At the same time as losing weight around the neck however, sufferers are also encouraged to attempt to strengthen those muscles around the airways in order to offer more support to the structure during sleep. This can be achieved using free weights and resistance machines in the gym and particularly targeting the muscles around the neck. Ask your personal trainer for advice.
A similar home remedy is to open up your airways by changing the angle at which you’re sleeping. Use lots of pillows and prop your head up to give your neck support and to open up the trachea. Similarly sleeping on your side as opposed to your back or front can have a positive effect.
At the same time you should avoid using any alcohol or sedatives before bed time – and that interestingly includes sleeping pills. The reason for this is that these are all relaxants that will act to further relax the muscles around your neck making a blockage in the windpipe more likely. This can cause a vicious circle where cases of sleep apnea go undiagnosed and patients attempt to self medicate for insomnia by using sleeping tablets that actual make the problem worse. If anything stimulants such as caffeine (which may also help central causes of apnea), or a supplement to increase blood flow to the muscles such as NO2 (nitric oxide – a vasodilator) could prove more effective, though these would not be conducive to sleep themselves.
