Estimates suggest that 85-90% of sleep apnea cases go undiagnosed and untreated. If you’re currently suffering from tiredness and lethargy then, it’s possible that you’re among that figure. By learning the following symptoms you should be able to identify whether you’re potentially at risk, and if so seek a professional opinion.
The most obvious symptoms of sleep apnea are tiredness and lethargy which can be caused by light sleeping. The condition is characterised by brief spells during which the patient doesn’t sleep, however normally they themselves are unaware of these. If you sleep with a partner then, ask them to observe you while you sleep and monitor your breathing.
Another highly common symptom, and one that is almost uniform in cases of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring. As the condition is caused by blockages to the airways, this can also caused the individual to snore while breathing normally. While not all cases of snoring indicate incidence of sleep apnea, combined with other factors it is a fairly good predictor. Two other signs that an individual is having difficulty sleeping can be fidgeting and thrashing during the night and headaches experienced in the mornings.
Other symptoms are those connected to lack of sleep and include irritability, memory difficulties and impaired sexual performance.
